Being a sci-fi and science reader, I have invested most of my reading money on books from these genre. My favourite writer, Sujatha, wrote an extraordinary science book, "கடவுள் இருக்கிறாரா? (Does God Exist?)". This book is filled with numerous concepts ranging from Quantum Physics to Coincidences to Genetics to Science Fiction. I read this book in 9th grade and didn't understand most of what was presented, since they were hardcore. I have been re-reading this book ever since and every time I read, it presents me with a newer perspective (It's true for almost all books!). He has shared his thoughts, and has quoted references from Stephen Hawking, Steven Weinberg, Abdus Salam, Russell Stannard, James Jeans and many more. If you like reading books on science and know Tamil, this book is an open treasure! (Will soon be posting a blog on this book). In this book, Sujatha provided an excerpt from Stephen Hawking's "Black Holes and Baby Universes". I immediately ordered this book on Amazon and this became my first Stephen Hawking read.
Since then, I have been enjoying reading Stephen Hawking's books and his oxymoronic take on explaining Physics, humorous at best and serious when need be. I recently read "Brief Answers to Big Questions" and have experienced the best of Physics. When it comes to science books, I always take numerous notes on what the author actually explains and what I understood. It is the only way of retaining valuable learnings and gives an opportunity to go through the concepts when needed. Here, I have shared my understanding of each chapter from the book.
Chapter - 1: Is There a God?
In this chapter, Hawking discusses the concept of God and explores various arguments for and against the existence of a higher power. He starts with the timeless question of whether a divine being, God, exists. He presents a scientific perspective on the origin of the universe, suggesting that the laws of physics can explain the universe's existence without the need for a divine creator. However, he acknowledges the complexities of this debate and encourages open-minded exploration. The chapter navigates through the concepts of theology and science, discussing the concept of a creator in the context of modern cosmological theories.
Chapter - 2: How Did It All Begin?
This is the best chapter in the book. He explores various Physics concepts that are worth reading. He explains complex scientific concepts in a digestible manner. He addresses the question of the origin of the universe, discussing theories such as the Big Bang and inflationary cosmology. The chapter provides a comprehensive overview of cosmic history, from the initial moments of creation to the formation of galaxies and stars. He explains concepts like quantum fluctuations, inflation, cosmic microwave background radiation, anthropic principle and CERN experiments, to provide insights into the early moments of the universe. The anthropic principle is really mind-blowing. It made me think about it for days.
We live in the most probable of all possible worlds - Stephen Hawking
Chapter - 3: Is There Other Intelligent Life in the Universe?
This chapter explores the possibility of extra-terrestrial life and the search for intelligent civilizations beyond Earth. Hawking discusses the challenges of interstellar communication. Hawking engages with astrobiology, discussing the conditions for life elsewhere in the cosmos and humanity's efforts to explore and communicate with potential extra-terrestrial intelligences. He highlights the importance of space exploration and SETI (Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence) efforts and Breakthrough Listen initiatives in our quest for cosmic companions.

Chapter - 4: Can We Predict the Future?
This is another interesting chapter where Hawking discusses the nature of prediction and whether it is possible to foresee future events with accuracy. He delves into concepts like determinism, wave functions, chaos theory, and the limitations of scientific prediction. Hawking emphasizes the importance of probabilistic models and uncertainty in our understanding of the future. He encourages readers to ponder the complexities of prediction in a dynamic and uncertain world.
Chapter - 5:. What Is Inside a Black Hole?
This chapter explores the mysterious nature of black holes and what lies beyond their event horizons. He unravels the mysteries of black holes, discussing their formation, properties, and the boundary known as the event horizon. He discusses the physics of black holes, including singularity, event horizons, and Hawking radiation. He presents cutting-edge research and theoretical insights into these cosmic phenomena.
Chapter - 6: Is Time Travel Possible?
Hawking examines the concept of time travel, discussing theories, paradoxes, and the potential implications. He explores ideas like closed time-like curves and wormholes. The chapter navigates through speculative realms of temporal physics, blending science fiction with scientific inquiry. He presents time travel as a fascinating concept, highlighting the complexities and unresolved questions, balancing scientific questions with the challenges and uncertainties involved.
Chapter - 7: Will We Survive on Earth?
In this chapter, Hawking discusses existential threats to humanity and the prospects for long-term survival. He addresses issues like climate change, nuclear proliferation, pandemics, and asteroid impacts. Hawking suggests for global cooperation and investments in space exploration as potential solutions.
Chapter - 8: Should We Colonize Space?
Hawking explores the idea of human colonization of other planets and celestial bodies. He discusses the scientific, ethical, and practical considerations of space colonization, including the challenges of space travel, terraforming, and sustainability. Hawking thinks of a future where humanity expands beyond Earth to ensure its long-term survival. He envisions a future where space colonization ensures our long-term survival and progress.
Chapter - 9: Will Artificial Intelligence Outsmart Us?
This chapter examines the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on humanity. He discusses AI development, machine learning, ethical dilemmas, and the risks of AI. He engages with AI development, machine learning, and the risks of super-intelligent AI surpassing human intelligence. He emphasizes the need for responsible AI governance and proactive measures to ensure AI benefits society without posing existential threats.
Chapter - 10: How Do We Shape the Future?
In the final chapter, Hawking reflects on humanity's role in shaping its destiny and the importance of scientific progress. The chapter serves as a call to action, encouraging readers to embrace knowledge, reason, and compassion in addressing global issues and advancing human civilization.
